Buncombe County, North Carolina

**Buncombe County, North Carolina is in the west part of the state and contains 2,000 square miles. It occupies a broad valley, between 2 ridges of the Alleghany Mountains. It is drained by the French Broad River and its tributaries, and by Nolachucky River. The country is elevated, the surface very much broken, and the soil is chiefly adapted to grazing. It is a very healthy region.
Capital, Ashville.
There were in 1840, neat cattle 10,596, sheep 9,803, swine 20,552; wheat 22,903 bushels produced, rye 9,251, Indian corn 304,271, oats 68,544, potatoes 21,308, tobacco 8,619 pounds, 9 stores with capital of $41,450; 5 tanneries, 62 distilleries, 36 grist mills, 25 saw mills, 1 oil mill, 1 printing office, 1 weekly newspaper. Capital in manufactures, $38,533.
It has 1 academy with 15 students, 1 school with 10 scholars.
Population: 1830, 16,259; 1840, whites 8,798, slaves 1,199, free colored 87; total, 10,084.
